Budding global awareness

Despite the increasing awareness regarding sustainability and agriculture, there is still a significant amount of work to be done. Since 2020, we have witnessed a surge in sustainable agriculture practices. According to the 2025 Minnesota AFNR blueprint review, agriculture education continues to grow in both urban and rural communities. The once prevalent rural community agriculture is now being interwoven into urban areas across Minnesota.

Recognizing the trend towards sustainable agriculture, Minnesota 4-H created a curriculum to educate both youth and adults across Minnesota and beyond. Fields, Food, and You: Cultivating Global Agriculture Awareness was designed to be adaptable for various audiences and environments, ensuring a broad reach and impact.

A curriculum for both urban and rural youth in grades 3-8

The "Fields, Food, and You" curriculum comprises 10 lessons focused on agronomy. Each lesson includes modifications to help facilitators adapt the content to fit particular audiences and settings. Recognizing that many facilitators might need additional information to understand how these topics relate to daily life, we include educational videos that can be used both in teaching settings and as a learning tool for facilitators.

Recently, the Minnesota 4-H agriculture ambassadors used one of these lessons to reach over 1,200 youth throughout the state. After receiving intentional training, these high school ambassadors adapted a hands-on lesson on manure management to fit diverse audiences. For instance, they interchanged manure management with fertilizer management to better connect with young people who might be unfamiliar with manure but could understand the same concepts using fertilizer.

Creating global agriculturalists

The "Fields, Food and You" curriculum aims to empower future global agriculturalists by providing comprehensive learning experiences tailored to their needs. This curriculum focuses on cultivating a deep understanding of agricultural practices, sustainable farming techniques, and the interconnectedness of food systems. It emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to address real-world agricultural challenges. By integrating practical fieldwork, scientific inquiry, and community engagement, "Fields, Food and You" fosters a holistic approach to agricultural education that prepares students to become effective stewards of our global food supply.
